When I was a Brownie in Girl Scouts, our neighborhood fundraiser for the year was a cookbook compiled of recipes from all the various troops in the neighborhood. Years later, when searching for a sugar cookie recipe, I stumbled across one of these cookbooks at my mother's house. In it were multiple sugar cookie recipes to choose from. Ultimately, I went with one from a friend of mine, a decision I'm glad I made. These cookies always come out well and over the years, I have received many compliments on them. In fact, some have even requested them when the time comes for holiday cookies. This recipe also falls into my tried and true category.

The original recipe said to make the dough and leave it in the refrigerator overnight. While that is entirely up to you, it's something I've never done. This dough rolls out nicely and makes a decent amount of cookies per batch. This past holiday season, I made 110 of them in various shapes from two batches. I've found that less decorative sugar will give a lighter, less sweet cookie. The more decorative sugar, the more "sugary" the flavor comes out.

2 1/2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter, room temperature
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix ingredients together in large bowl.
On a well floured surface roll out dough into desired thickness to cut with cookie cutters.
Bake at 350 for 8 minutes.
